Dear friend of life,
As you are probably well aware by now, New Zealand now has a new government led by John Key and the National Party.
So what does this mean for the pro-life, marriage and family cause here in New Zealand?
Well it’s a little too early to say for sure, but there are some glimmers of hope in the fact that National has some pro-life MPs in senior positions within the party, including their new deputy prime minister. Many MPs in the National party have also fairly consistently voted in a reasonably pro-family manner over the last couple of years.
But whether any of this will result in a reversal of the last nine years of anti-life and anti-family policy is just too hard to call, as no commitment to such issues has been made, or even hinted at, by John Key or the National party.
Our new Prime Minister John Key has stated that he does not believe in God, and he holds personal views on important moral issues that many of us would strongly disagree with, but the positive thing is that he has voted against many anti-marriage and anti-family policies in the past – stating that he had done this because the electorate had asked him to.
This may indicate that we will have a Prime Minister who is more open to listening to the New Zealand people over the next three years, and if this is the case then it will be a massive difference from what we have experienced over the last nine years.
Either way though, the change of government has most certainly put the brakes on many aspects of the anti-life, anti-marriage and anti-family agenda that the Labour government was working hard to accomplish in New Zealand – how long the brakes stay on that agenda though is not certain at this stage.
There are still some areas of concern though.
One positive aspect of the New Zealand First party’s failure to get the 5% of the vote needed to get back into parliament is that their private members bill promoting euthanasia will not be back in the ballot at this stage, but this is still an issue we need to be aware of and someone else could easily take over sponsoring the same, or a similar, pro-euthanasia bill.
We will do our best to keep you abreast of any developments in this regard.
There is also the fact that Kevin Hague has made it into Parliament as a new Green Party MP. Kevin Hague is a former head of the NZ AIDS Foundation, a gay lobby group that has been responsible for running some of the most immoral and obscene “safe” sex campaigns in this country.
In a recent interview Mr. Hague listed several strong anti-marriage and anti-family policies that he considered top of his list of priorities should he make it into parliament – these include full gay marriage, and removing the rights of principals, teachers and others to say “no” to gay activist groups like Rainbow Youth operating in NZ schools.
We are going to be running a special article about Kevin Hague and his publicly stated agenda tomorrow morning on our blog: Sempa Vita – make sure you don’t miss it!
Over the coming days and weeks we will continue to provide you with all the important information you need to know about how the pro-life and family cause will be impacted by the result of last night’s election – including information on various MPs that are now in parliament.
So how will this new government impact upon the work of Family Life International NZ?
Well, it will be business as usual here at Family Life International and we will continue to focus on providing care to women in need in crisis-pregnancy or post-abortion situations, and we will continue to maintain a strong focus on our important educational work which is the only way that we can hope to see real and lasting change for the future of New Zealand.
Yes, political change is important, but ultimately we are not likely to see such change, or certainly not in any lasting way, until more Kiwis have been formed in the truth about important pro-life, marriage and family issues, and then begin to vote and act based on such principles.
To this end we will continue to outreach people of all ages, and especially those of the next generation, with important truths about life, marriage and family issues, in an effort to turn the tide in New Zealand back towards the culture of life.
While some are focusing on reaching into the political sphere through the route of legislation, we are continuing to work hard to form New Zealand’s future politicians with important philosophical truths about the human person, sexuality and why we must give inalienable rights and respects to all human beings.
In fact, we even have a special relationship with the high school that has consistently produced the greatest number of politicians in recent years, and we have been actively involved in providing pro-life and family formation to their current students.
So while there is a mood of uncertainty around the country this morning about the future direction of New Zealand under a National led government, you can be assured that there is definitely no uncertainty of direction or purpose at Family Life International NZ, and that we will continue to work hard for the pro-life, marriage and family cause within New Zealand, because there is still a lot of important work to be done.
Thank you for your continued support of our important pro-life and family work in New Zealand,
The team at Family Life International NZ

This government is certainly an improvement. Fortunately although the Green party has another MP they are out of government so will have less influence than previously. There are many good people in National. Also, although Act is liberal, they are seeking to fix the smacking law, and hopefully can make this a bottom line of a coalition deal, which would be one small plus.
It could have been much better. Neither the Family Party or the Pacific Party managed to gain a seat, meaning there is no overtly conservative representation. So it is far from ideal. But it is still a massive improvement.
